YAMAHA DX7

GET THE SOUND OF THE YAMAHA DX7

The Synth that defined the 80s! If you are after classic keyboard sounds, then this is the collection for you. These patches tell of the retro glory days of when the sound of synthesizers ruled the music charts. We have handpicked and sampled 10 of these classic preset sounds for you to use in your music production.

GEAR OVERVIEW

The Yamaha DX7 is a FM Synthesizer, which unlike analogue synths is only capable of generating Sine waves. The DX7 has 6 wave engines called "Operators" and can be routed and manipulated to vary the sound according to how you want your synth to sound... But, it was really complex to do it yourself, so most players just used the presets that came onboard - these sounds have been heard across countless classic tunes!

THE HISTORY

Manufactured by Yamaha between 1983 to 1989, the DX7 is one of the best selling synths of all time (over 200,000 units!). Unlike the many analog synths that dominated the market at the time, the DX7 had a digital display, complex and layered menus and lack of conventional control knobs. Because of this, very few users learnt how to program the DX7 in depth and opted to simply use the presets that came with the keyboard - these sounds became a staple sound of 80s pop music.

FAMOUSLY USED BY

Whitney Houston, Kool and the Gang, Stevie Wonder, U2, Phil Collins, Luther Vandross, Brian Eno, Herbie Hancock, Beastie Boys, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elton John... The list goes on...
